Home Ministry orders blocking of 250 Twitter accounts, here’s the reason why
Acting on the Central government’s orders, Twitter India on Monday blocked around 250 tweets and Twitter accounts for promoting fake and provocative content. As per sources, the micro-blogging giant blocked the malicious tweets and accounts which were inciting people for “genocide”.
According to sources, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITY) had directed Twitter to block around 250 tweets/Twitter accounts which were using ‘#ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide’ hashtag and making fake, intimidatory and provocative tweets on January 30.
Sources also stated that incitement to genocide is a grave threat to public order and therefore the Ministry of Electronics & IT ordered for blocking of these Twitter accounts and tweets under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
Twitter finally acted upon the directions following a request from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and various law enforcement agencies to prevent any escalation of law and order situation in the country in view of the ongoing farmers’ agitation.
