HAL Proposes amphibious Dornier 228 aircraft
State-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under the ” Make in India ” program intends to design and develop a seaplane version of the HAL Built Dornier 228 aircraft and a scale model of the same was displayed for the first time at the Aero India 2021. Dornier 228 seaplane will be offered to commercial and Military operators for establishing a connection between the chain of islands in Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep.
Dornier 228 seaplane will help in inter-island communication, search and rescue, and reconnaissance of islands. Navy can use them for delivering spares and tools to the warships at deep-sea in case of break down or to be used for emergency evacuation of personnel.
HAL has not proposed any timeline for actual prototype development of the seaplane based on the Dornier 228 aircraft and it is a concept proposal to the Indian Navy and Indian coast guard. the idea was originally floated in 2017.
