DRDO to showcase Indigenous Surface to Air Missile system “VL-SRSAM” at Aero India 2021
State-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will be showcasing a scale model of the Indigenous Surface to Air Missile system VL-SRSAM (Vertically Launched -Short-range Surface Air to Missile) that is Ground launch version of the locally developed Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) currently under development for Indian Navy and Indian Air force (IAF).
VL-SRSAM is a next-generation, ship-Truck based, all-weather, air defense weapon system that will provide complete protection against all known and projected air targets Over 25+ km.
DRDO has developed an 8 Cell vertical launching system (VLS) Plug that can be installed in frontline warships in an 8×2 configuration for the Indian Navy. DRDO also has developed a Canister based launching system that can be mounted on Truck for the Air force version. VL-SRSAM can be retrofitted in a wide range of naval platforms from offshore patrol vessels (OPV) to frigates and Destroyers.
VL-SRSAM will be replacing the Israeli Barak-1 Point defense system missile on Naval platforms and will be supplementing SPYDER systems in the Air force. DRDO is in the process of fabricating a VL-SRSAM missile system and developmental trials are expected in the coming months.
